Snake River Montessori History

Montessori education has been available to preschool and kindergarten students in Idaho Falls since 1989 through the efforts of Jill Schurman and Barbara Turner, the school’s founders. From that beginning, the Snake River Montessori School (SRMS) has grown with the help of parents interested in furthering their children’s Montessori education beyond kindergarten.

In 1996, SRMS, Inc. was established as a non-profit (501) c (3) corporation governed by a Board of Directors with no more than three quarters of the directors being parents of SRMS students.

The main building, built in 2000, was designed specifically to meet the needs of a Montessori classroom and an associated extended day program. A new wing, built in 2003, has allowed for additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a media center.
